v2.9 and overwriting of files

Post by macwino » Mon Apr 12, 2004 12:32 am

I just did a manual installation of v2.9 and then opened the feature panel. Since I did a manual installation into my own special scenery folder I corrected the path to my v2.9 installation and selected Apply Changes. I took no other actions in the feature panel. The log indicated a list of backups, etc. that were performed.

Here is my concern. I have altered a few of the textures that come with the default FS 2004. In particular, I have added the FScene European textures for all 4 seasons, and I have installed Peter Wildings water textures v.15. By simply installing v2.9 and correcting the path to the v2.9 folder, have I altered any of these texture upgrades? I hope not.

But if I have, can I restore them by checking the box in the feature panel that restores MSFS stock files? In other words, if my textures were altered and they were not the stock MSFS textures, will any backup created by v2.9 install the custom textures I was using, or does v2.9 have its own set of MSFS default textures that will be installed, thus requiring me to reinstall my FScene textures and Peter Wildings water textures?

Finally, if I do choose to use some of v2.9's custom textures, will the backup created when I select these textures be a backup of my custom textures, or will it be a backup based on the MSFS default textures?

Thanks for your assistance.

Featurepanel will backup the files directly from your current (and customized) settings in FS. This is happening when Featurepanel is first started and you press apply changes.

So, in this case when you uncheck a feature where those files are involved, featurepanel will restore those customized files every time you click apply changes.

If you want to tell featurepanel that it has to make a new current backup status (backup the current new customized state of your files in FS), then you have to alter the featurepanel's ini file.

The ini file is found in the featurepanel directory and is named featurepanel_nl2000.ini.

Find the entry Backup_init and change it to 1

Backup_init =1

The next time you start featurepanel, you will see under the close button that featurepanel is in it's initial backup state. When you apply the changes, then featurepanel will first backup the files from your installed flightsimulators again and therafter apply the changes you have set with the checkboxes

This method is added specially for simmer who change their configuration often.

Johan, thanks so very much for the prompt, explicit and comforting reply. You guys have thought of everything! I especially appreciate the tip about the ini file, which will be very helpful to me.
