The Rhine is Blocked - Why is it so?

Post by 617_Sticks » Fri Oct 01, 2010 3:19 pm

I wonder why the biggest river in Europe is blocked with reverse waterfalls and land bridges. In such nice scenery as yours I thought maybe the scenery might be a more accurate representation. Bit hard to fly a Dambuster Lancaster at + 60 feet here.

http://www.netleygrove.net/post/Blocked_Rhine.jpg

As far as I can determine I am near Nijmegem just south of the intersection EH370 in your LI scenery. FSX is the only FS that the Rhine does not flow to the sea (guess its Waal here as not over the boarder yet).

Is there a reason that MS's mistakes cannot be fixed?

Thanks

Cheers

Hi Ross,
Can you give the coordinates in FSX where this happens?
To find this out of your screendump is a bit difficult.

We will try to fix this in an update.

Hi Bert

Actually that is only one of several blockages along the river.

I have a limited account and have yet to instal the scenery for the remainder that would give me NL2000 from the Northsea. I will give you a list of co-ordinates but not in this email as I have to go out and cannot fly the Rhine segment of my Dambuster raid. I will do so later today.

MS default has them and I think your scenery actually makes them worse, but the problem arises from MS not getting it right in the first place. I guess unless your low flying in a Dambuster Lancaster no one would be worried about the issue. Takes skill to follow the Rhine. Love the challenge of up and over your bridges.

Cheers

Rhine River Faults in LI Scenery

Post by 617_Sticks » Sat Oct 02, 2010 7:28 am

My low flyin was halted with a bridge crash at:
N51 49.10 E5 15.62 --- big bridge and from memory I was at 257 ft to climb over it from +60 ft and hit something.

The following are fault areas but they do not necessarily fully block the Rhine. Big rocks or a reverse waterfall may be involved. Co-ordinates are approximate based on what I see from the cockpit and then a pause. I will post an image to show what I mean.

N51 52.72 E5 26.15 ------- N51 53.96 E5 35.79
N51 52.74 E5 46.00 ------- N51 52.15 E5 49.19
N51 51.82 E5 49.91 ------- N51 51.46 E5 50.6
Image in first post --------- N51 51.09 E5 51.68
This area is particularly bad near two bridges and a reverse water fall is also involved.
N51 51.21 E5 52.46 ------- N51 52.11 E5 53.64
N51 52.40 E5 54.97 ------- N51 51.35 E5 58.42
N51 52.79 E6 00.03 ------- N51 52.37 E6 02.33
N51 51.88 E6 03.78 ------- N51 51.70 E6 04.21
N51 51.03 E6 05.75

Near the end of the LI scenery at the boarder that runs along the Rhine, a long line of narrow land spits running with the flow starting at:

N51 50.71 E6 8.93 --- guess this is in Germany and outside NL2000

Thanks a lot

Ross

I went back to the bridge that I crashed into only to find something even stranger, traffic going under the bridge and accross the water. Thought I was seeing things.

Image

Then a bit further along no bridge and traffic treading water.

Image

Sorry about using slew but went past and had to come back to get an image. Interesting stuff at low level!

Cheers

About the traffic issue, the explanation can be found in the FAQ

Hi Ross,

There must be something wrong with your NL2000 configuration. In the screenshots I don't see the NL2000 scenery but the standard FSX scenery. The 3D objects are NL2000, but the textures of the landscape are not there.
Have you downloaded the right province there, or did youi install only the 3D objects?
I dont see the "landbridges" in my scenery, the waterfall is there, which means there is a mistake in the hight data. We have seen this at more places in the scenery.

Pls check your settings, read the manual how to install NL2000 as you are missing a lot now.

Thanks Wolf and Thanks Bert.

Well I have quite a problem it seems generated perhaps by installing the scenery under SP2 and then just two weeks ago installing acceleration after un-installing SP2.

When I checked activation in FSX it was all ticked but in the list from the installer all were un-ticked. I guess the change in FSX programs caused that.

I went throught the process again of installing the scenery I have and the installer list now is ticked.

This process induced into FSX two sets of sceneries. One set, for example, named nl2k_v4_resample_LI (original name) and one set named NL2000_v4_Fotoscenery Limberg.

I deleted from FSX the nl2k_v4 set and here are two images of the main blockage where the river is 10 feet different in height on either side and the "hole" in between is about 120 feet deep (ground radar gauge readings). Firstly the default scenery with no NL2000 scenery activated in FSX.

Image

and now the one with all my NL2000 scenery activated in FSX including Limberg which is the part of the river I am in.

Image

Nothing seems to have changed except the objects.

So what do I do now because this and your reply indicates I am not getting the advantage of the NL2000 scenery only its objects. Did I delete the wrong entries in FSX as noted above. Guess I will have to try a full un-install of the scenery and then re-install it all again.

Maybe you could post a similar view of this area that will show what I should have.

Thanks, Cheers

Ross

Ross,

At the place in your screendump there is a mistake in the hight data. It results in some kind of a waterfall. Most likely this mistake comes from MS itself, we have to investigate this.

In your screendump you see then the landbridges.
Look at my screendump from the same position. It's different.

Image

I suggest you first remove NL2000 as described in the manual and then reinstall it.
This will not solve your "waterfalls", but it will give you a much better scenery.

Wow that is quite a difference. Nice aircraft. Glad our river cruise in 2007 did not strike this sort of thing.

Having flown since CFS1 in CFS2, FS2002 and FS2004 I am quite sure the waterfall etc is related to Microsoft not getting anything right. Yet FSX is SUPPOSED to be the best ever. What a load of ...........!

Yes I did a complete un install and a new install and there is no change in what I see so I am stuck with it I guess.

Maybe I was wrong to have gone from a Pentium to AMD and to a Ge-Force card instead of ATI. Ah well, you do not always win and it seems I lost this one.

Cheers

PS: Its the start of a new month so tonight I will download the segment that will take the Rhine all the way across the Netherlands from the Northsea. Facinating stuff.

I forgot to add this URL for a film I made on my slow computer that was really not capable of running FSX. I updated. If you look at it you will see I flew this Rhine segment in FS2004 because I could not use what microsoft dished up.

Ross,

It cannot be your processor or graphics card that makes this happening. When they are not good enough, you will have low framerates, unsharp scenery and that sort of things.
The NL2000 scenery underground isn't there. Have you checked your scenery.cfg to see if the scenery is active in there?

Reg.
Bert

PS: great movie. Where did you get this plane, as I am flying only old propeller planes. Difficult to find nice stuff for FSX.

Bert

Yes its all in the Scenery.cfg file so no idea where too next. Just accept it I guess.

The Lancaster is a FS2004 payware Dambuster Lancaster from Plane-Design that I was given permission to update to be a true DB Lancaster for FS2004. Most look like a DB aircraft but are not operation ready with the extra things that the DB aircraft had fitted. Extra altitude gauge, Dann Bombsight etc etc. There have been a total of about 9000 downloads from Simviation and Flightsimcom. Whilst it will fly in FSX it uses "old"gauges that mean it will have some black holes in FSX and the 2D cockpit is only the Bombaimers view for FSX. It would need the new FSX panel.cfg file to be effective in FSX.

Plane-Design were working on a FSX version of their Lancaters but they have never appeared. His research was generally better than other payware providers so the aircraft is nearer the mark. No one gets a DB Lancaster correct, not even the scale model makers.

I was fortunate to sit in the pilot's seat of the Lancaster at East Kirkby in 2007 and use the controls. Although a Mk7 it was a good insight into what a Lancaster really is. My interest stems from CFS1 back in 2003 and I still fly my CFS1 Dambuster Raid each year in May.

Cheers, Thanks

Ross
